What’s it like to stay in a Castle? – by Paul and Carole

Clearwell Castle

Ever wanted to stay in a castle? Well we did and have now managed to fulfill that dream. We had the opportunity to do this when our niece Samii married Joe at Clearwell Castle. We only stayed for one night but it is a night that we will never forget.

Clearwell Castle has won many awards for best wedding venue, set within the stunning Forest of Dean and provided the perfect fairytale setting. family stayed in three type of rooms in the castle. Dunraven Room which was on the top floor of the turret. Vereker Suite which was a family room consisting of two four poster beds Baynham Suite

My beautiful niece Samii

Our family stayed in three type of rooms in the castle, all very different. Below we have described what each room was like with a short video tour too, so you can see what it really is like to stay in a castle!

The Dunraven Room at Clearwell Castle

Paul and Lucas stayed in the Dunraven Room which was on the top floor of the turret. It was quite a climb but worth it when we got there. The room was not huge however very comfortable with a double bed and wardrobe space. The bathroom was pretty spectacular with carpeted steps up to the bath. Tea and coffee facilities were available and complimentary murray mints too which sadly the boys were very excited about!

The Vereker Suite at Clearwell Castle

My sister and I stayed in the Vereker Suite which was a family room consisting of two four poster beds. The room was huge with views over the gardens. The beds were so comfortable and the detail throughout the room was exquisite. The bathroom was also a decent size with a nice selection of toiletries available.

The Baynham Suite at Clearwell Castle

Our nieces Jodie and Georgia stayed in the Baynham Suite another family room that was larger than the Vereker suite. Again the details in the room were perfect, including a seating area. Another large bathroom, however this room did have a jacuzzi bath which the others did not.

All of the rooms were excellent and the attention to detail could not be faulted. Clearwell Castle is a superb location for a wedding, the organisation was second to none and we had such a fantastic day celebrating the wedding of Samii and Joe.

Stunning Clearwell Castle

The setting is spectacular and the rooms and views lived up to our expectations. It really was a special day surrounded by all of our family, including my Dad, Uncle Mick and Aunty Marg who are all in their 80’s and were still on the dance floor at 11pm!

  1. Hehe we loved the video with Lucas already in the tub! I’m glad the boys had fun and were able to enjoy their Murray Candy Mints in style! The castle looks beautiful, and we hope to be able to stay in a castle like this one, one day! 🙂

  7. We would love to stay in a castle someday! We wouldn’t mind visiting the Forest of Dean as well. As big Harry Potter fans, the Forest of Dean fascinates us. Such a lovely location for a wedding.

    • The Forest of Dean is beautiful. JK Rowling went to the same school as me Wyedean, she was in the year above me, unfortunately I didn’t know her! Snape was based on our Chemistry teacher Mr Stinger and he was just like him! Thanks for your comment.

Clearwell Castle is such an Instagrammable building, surrounded by such greenery. I wish it was closer to Yorkshire! What a wonderful location for a wedding.

  9. I had always wanted to stay in a castle, so we decided to spend a night at Thornbury Castle for Sy’s birthday one year … and it was amazing. For history buffs, King Henry VIII stayed at Thornbury Castle with Anne Bolyn so it’s pretty old, but it was wonderful, you should check it out for a special occasion for yourself as it’s only at J14 of the M5 🙂 So glad you had a chance to experience an overnight in a castle at Clearwell, it’s a place I have always wanted to visit, especially as it was for a wedding, how magnificent! #feetdotravel

    • Oh didn’t know that you could stay at Thornbury Castle and like you say not too far away! Clearwell Castle was the perfect place for a wedding we had such a wonderful day. Thanks for your comment and the info! 😀

What a great opportunity to stay in a castle for a wedding! You hit the jackpot twice: you attended a wedding and got to fulfill your dream too. They did a good job renovating those bathrooms. I’m sure they didn’t look like that some time ago when the castle was built. #TheWeeklyPostcard

    • The castle is beautiful and a lot of work has gone into updated the rooms and bathrooms. It was a perfect wedding venue, we had such a wonderful stay! Thanks for commenting.

  12. What a wonderful venue for a wedding and it’s so nice for family to be able to stay together at the same venue and extend the celebrations. So glad you had a lovely time – and congratulations to the happy couple.

  13. Lolo says:

Would love to stay in a castle! We wanted to have our wedding in a castle hotel here in Germany but they’re incredibly difficult to get ahold of we have up! Looks like a great place though for a wedding! Thanks for linking up with #TheWeeklyPostcard!

it seems beautiful!! We have stayed in a castle as well. It was at that time a youth hostel. A really nice experience, just a pity that due to lack of maintenance they had to close it.

  17. Oh, I like everything about that Vereker suite — the decor, the view, and the en suite bathroom. I would love to stay in a nice (not musty) castle some day. I need someone to get married in one to give me the excuse, too.
