Which is the best campsite for visiting Cardiff?

Cardiff Caravan and Camping Park Review

Post updated February 2022.

We have got to know the city of Cardiff in Wales well over the years as it is only about an hour away from our home city of Gloucester. Since having our Motorhome we have now stayed at the Cardiff Caravan and Camping Park many times as it is an excellent base for exploring Cardiff and the surrounding area.

How to book your pitch at Cardiff Caravan and Camping Park?

Booking was very easy. We arranged it over the telephone and paid a deposit, confirmation was received by email. On one ocassion due to illness, we had to change our booking dates and this was dealt with promptly.

Where do you go when you arrive at Cardiff Caravan and Camping Park?

Reception was easy to find, it is just around the corner from the entrance. On our first stay we gave our booking details to the receptionist but unfortunately our booking confirmation could not be found on the system. The receptionist Michelle was very apologetic and reassured us that a solution would be found. After a brief nervous wait Michelle found us a pitch on hard standing which was one of their reserve pitches, it appeared in a good position at the bottom end of the site. One thing we had noticed is that sometimes it isn’t until something goes wrong that you find out what sort of site you are dealing with and Michelle proved to be excellent when under pressure and a pleasure to deal with. The on site manager also came to find us, apologised and was going to investigate what had happened. They also gave us a discount which was an added bonus.

We have not experienced any issues on any of our subsequent visits.

What facilities are there at Cardiff Caravan and Camping Park?

There is a coded shower block about halfway down the site, which was kept very clean, however on our last visit the block is in desperate need of updating as you can see from the picture below. However, the showers were really hot and the toilets were well stocked with paper. We have never had to queue to use these facilities.

We paid for electric hookup which also had a water outlet attached which we were impressed with.Cardiff free wifi is available by reception, the signal was ok but not very strong, you had to literally sit outside reception to get any signal. There is a cafe on site with seating outside. Bicycle hire was also available, and popular as the site is next to the Taff Trail.

We thought the prices were reasonable for being a city centre campsite particularly as it is in the capital of Wales. Prices correct October 2019.

For a city break the location is superb within walking distance of Cardiff city centre. To get to the centre, walk past the barrier at the end of the site and you can either turn right past the SWELEC stadium or go straight on until you reach the path which runs adjacent to the River Taff.

Turn right onto the riverside path and walk for 20 minutes and you will come out by Bute Park on Castle Road.

You will see the Castle to your left and the Principality Stadium (Millennium) in front of you.

Where can I visit from this Cardiff Campsite?

Visit Barry Island – Made famous by the TV series Gavin and Stacey, it is a beach resort along the coast in Wales. We both have fond memories of visiting here as kids, so were looking forward to going back. The train from Cardiff Central Station to Barry Island took just under 30 minutes and cost £5.10 each. The train station at Barry Island is just across the road from the Pleasure Island Fairground, so easy to do. After walking along the beach and seeing the famous arcade where Nessa worked, make sure you walk out to the headland to the left of the beach, have a look at this short video of the Glamorgan coast line.

Also head to the colourful beach huts at the east end of the beach as that is the quieter end of the beach away from the famous Gavin and Stacey Arcade.

Live Music – If you are after live music Cardiff has plenty of it, our favourite place we head to is the Brewhouse, in the Brewery Quarter. Live music daily from 5pm and happy hours!

Visit Cardiff Bay – You can walk from Cardiff centre which would take approximately 30 minutes but we took a taxi which cost £6.50. Coming back we took the Aquabus to the Cardiff Castle Centre stop which cost £4 each.

The bay is a great place to visit with lots of eating and drinking venues and definitely worth a visit.

The Cardiff Caravan and Camping Park is a great site with clean facilities and lovely, friendly, helpful staff. It is a perfect location for a city break to Cardiff. We thoroughly recommend a stay here and we will definitely be back again and again!
